Windows Installer 3.1 Problem

I just installed Office 2003 Professional Edition it works okay for me (as
owner) but when the second user or a guest try to use Office (I see now, it
is happening to other non-Office programs as well), Windows Installer tries
to install the program again. It does it every time. I tried updating the
Windows Installer 3.1 V2, I removed Offie 2003 and reinstalled it. I still
have the same problem.

There is no problem with any programs for myself but anyone else that signs
on has to go through the install process. It has not yet installed more than
one copy of Office but it does go through the install process.

Does anyone know what I can do to correct this problem?

Thanks,
Gene

Hi,

Have you let it complete the process? What you are seeing is quite normal as
each user runs an Office program for the first time. If it is doing it
repeatedly for the same user, that is a different story. If the cache was
not kept on the drive (full installation), you may need to have each user
insert the install disk the first time they run an office program.

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I didn't know that it was normal for each user to
have to go through the install process each time. However, I did let it go
through the process for quite sometime the first time the second user tried
to use OUTLOOK. It seemed like it would never quit, I let it go for at least
15 minutes the first time. It just kept repeating the process.

It does repeat the same thing for the same user each and every time. It even
does it now for WordPad and IE and several other non- Office programs that
have been on the PC for at least a year.

Thanks for the help,
Gene

Hi Gene,

Then that is definitely not normal. Have you tried doing a repair of the
Office installation yet?

Rick,

I did do a repair of Office 2003 and after that I tried removing Office and
then installed office again. BTW, I did do the same thing with Office 2000
when Outlook messed up and I could never send email using Office 2000. After
trying for days to correct that problem, I thought that something was wrong
with my Office 2000 disks is why I bought Office 2003.

I initially thought that the Office 2003 program I bought was the culprit
but now I am not so sure. My system came with a trial version of Office 2003
installed but I did not activatebecause I had Office 2000 on my other PC and
when it crashed due to lightening I put Office 2000 on this computer. For the
last few months, Outlook 2000 and WORD 2000 have been getting a "Installing
Office 2003 message" when trying to open the Offfice 2000 programs. This has
happened a number of times. I hit the "Cancel" button and then the 2000
program opens. I think it may be possible that somehow several months ago I
accidently clicked on the Office 2003 trial version and not Office 2000 and
that has caused a problem. I cancelled that installation when it started to
install 2003.

I think I am going to put everything back to where it was when I bought the
PC. I will remove the Office 2003 trial version before installing the Office
2003 program I just purchased on ebAY. I am hoping that may get rid of this
issue. My wife cannot log on and use the PC anymore unless she does
everything under my login.

Thanks again,
Gene

Rick,

I fixed the problem by going to "USER Accounts" and gave "Administrative
Rights" to the second user. Everything then started working as it should. I
then went back and changed the second user back to a "Limited Account" and
everything still works as it should. I am glad this one is over! Thanks for
your suggestons.
