Windows Hibernate, Standby and ScreenSaver problems..

On my windows xp pro pc at home, none of the power management and screen
saver settings work. Screensaver does not start when is scheduled, and so it
standby options like: turning off monitor, hard drive and etc. My computer
stays on all the time. It seems like there is some service running that is
keeping an active state and prevents from the screen saver starting and the
pc going into the stand by mode. Not sure how to figure out what this service
is or what is keeping my pc processing something at all times.

Please help,

Thanks

malware can cause this. Anti-virus is working? Firewall is working?
Scanned for trojans/worms lately?
