Windows hangs while modem connection to work is open

My problem is that my windows XP hangs(mouse cursor stops
moving and everything just freezes) seeminly randomly
anytime I have a connection to my ISP open. It will
generally hang after about 5 to 15 minutes but it can vary
from happening while my modem is still dialing the number
to an hour or 2 later. I have tried two different modems,
one a pci modem and the other a USB modem(the one I'm
currently using) but have the same trouble with both. I
have ensured that my BIOS and my drivers for my
motherboard(Gigabyte GA-8S655FX-L) are fully up to date.
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

I've got the same problem, if it's any help. Only happens with dial-up. When I'm at work,
I can connect to the LAN OK. Happens with a clean install. I think it was caused by one
of the automatically downloaded updates, but it would be too difficult to reinstall
windows and try them one at a time. This gets reported by other users every now and
again. Out of interest, what's your hardware? I've got a Toshiba laptop. In which country
are you connecting? I'm in UK.

My windows came with service pack 1a already installed so
I'm going to have some trouble finding out if it is one
of the updates. I think I will try installing a friend of
mines older version that does not come with sp1 just as a
quick test to see if it works. I'm running a desktop PC
heres the specs:
P42.6 HT 800FSB
Gigabyte GA-8S655FX-L monther board
512 Dual DDR400
SATA Maxtor 120GB
I'm connecting from sunny but drought ridden South Africa.
Thanks for the pointer I hope it works.

For both of you, I'd start with the basic troubleshooting for a Windows
operating system: scan with a current antivirus program (meaning a
version not later than 2002 and using updated virus definitions) show?
Also, remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from
www.security.kolla.de and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to
update these programs before running them. It is best to run antivirus
and spyware removal tools in Safe Mode. Since the first poster tried
different modems, we know it isn't that piece of hardware. I rather
doubt it was an update that is causing your problem(s). So eliminate
the most common Windows afflications: viruses and spyware. Delete your
temporary and Temporary Internet Files. After you are *sure* your
computer is clean, ensure that other programs aren't running in the
background (Quicktime, Office, what have you) and then try to connect.

If you need more help, please do post back, and include the results of
the above-suggested troubleshooting.

I've done all this twice in the past.
