WINDOWS FREEZE ON SHUTDOWN

Mike Klaiber

I have recently started to experience problems with Windows XP Pro freezing
on system shutdown. This seems to be a little intermittent but is most
noticeable on re-start following program install or up-grade. I can only
re-activate by pressing the re-set button, and even then the screen goes
blank going through the POST routine. It takes a couple of re-sets to show
the boot up screen, displaying a message:

"The system failed to boot several times before, you must enter SETUP to
reconfigure your system. Press F1 to resume."

I assume this fault has something to do with the BIOS settings. I have gone
there, but as I'm not sure what I should be reconfiguring, I've made no
changes.

The keyboard Sleep button also fails to work. Waking up after Hibernating
through the Start button, results in the same problem of failing to boot up,
as described, above. I assume all of this is related.

I have tried going back on System Restore, but this doesn't resolve
anything.

I have an A S Rock K7VT2 motherboard, with an AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor
and 1024 Mb DDR-RAM memory.

Can anyone offer any assistance please on what may be the problem, and how
to resolve?

Or is this a hardware discussion ?

Regards.

Hi, Mike. Normally shutdown issues have to do with programs that are
refusing to exit gracefully, but in your case since the system is
failing to boot with BIOS error messages, I think your problem may be
hardware. It could be something as simple as a power supply, or as
unpleasant as a failing motherboard. Here are some general hardware
troubleshooting steps:

1) Open the computer and run it open, cleaning out all dust bunnies and
observing all fans (overheating will cause system freezing);
2) test the RAM - I like Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com - let the test
run for an extended (like overnight) period of time - unless errors are
seen immediately;
3) test the hard drive with a diagnostic utility from the mftr.;
4) the power supply may be going bad or be inadequate for the devices
you have in the system;
5) test the motherboard with something like TuffTest from
www.tufftest.com. Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out
suspected parts with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing
yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your computer, take the
machine to a good local computer repair shop (not a CompUSA or Best Buy
type of store).

Good luck,

Malke

Mike, did you check your Front Side Bus ( FSB ) and CPU frequency settings
while in the Bios? That message is usually
received when the settings are out of whack ie: when overclocking the cpu
and fsb.

Thanks Rich.

I've checked the CPU frequency which is set to auto with a shown value of
133. However, despite going through all the menu settings, I can't find
anything for the FSB.

Regards.
