Windows flashing?

L

Lorraine W

Can anyone tell me why my windows (all windows - program, IE6, OE6 -
everything) keep flashing from active to inactive? Even while I'm typing
this, the cursor disappears, and the frame around the window grays out and
nothing works. It's like a neon light that flashes on and off. Has anyone
heard of this before - or have any help or ideas what might be causing it?

I'm using XP Pro SP2 with all current updates.

Try opening event viewer to get specific info as to what the OS is doing.
Sounds like a virus though...

I just re-booted and it seems to have gone away. (Another one of those
frustrating and infuriating glitches). I'd still like to know if anyone
else has ever come across something like this?

Thanks

Lorraine

If you mean your sys momentarily freezes, before coming back to life;
First, find your make of hard disk, then visit the manu web site and use
there free checking utility.
Then if that gives the all clear check your memory

Also check Event Logs (Administrative Tools)

I think I just found the problem - it's WordPerfect. When I open it - the
problems reappears instantly. I close it and it goes away. Think I'll try
doing a system restore, and if that doesn't work, I'm off the Corel
newsgroup. Will let you know if the system restore works.

Thanks for you prompt replies

Well - no luck. System restore didn't help. Hope the techies at Corel can
help.

What version of WordPerfect? I'm running both 12 and X3 here (on different
machines) and I've run 11 and (I think) 10 under Windows XP before that.
I've never seen WordPerfect cause such a problem.

Hi Ken;

I'm running WP X3. However, I've found out what the problem was. The
documents did get printed to my husband's printer (which I can't hear from
my location). Somehow (and don't ask how) his printer (on the LAN) was
selected on my machine as the default printer.

When the print dialogue box opened, it came up with Epson C80 (his) and I
changed it to Epson R320 (mine). But what I didn't notice was that although
the printer changed in the Name drop down printer selection box, it did not
change on the next line for "type". When I changed the default printer to
mine, it solved the problem. Weird. Everything was fine yesterday, and I
have no idea how the default printer got changed. Guess I have some
gremlins in my house (or computer?).

Ah well, another learning experience.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Yes, I saw your messages in the WordPerfect X3 newsgroup.

Glad you solved it, and glad it didn't turn out to be WordPerfect (it would
have surprised me if it sis).

Hi again Ken;

I'm still having a problem. It seems that every time I reboot, my default
printer is changed to my husband's printer (C80) instead of mine (R320).
The problem with the flashing doesn't occur until I open WordPerfect though.
But I've also noticed that if I try to print from a web page or OE, the C80
is also selected in the print dialogue box.

Do you have any idea what might cause this?

Sorry, no. Perhaps someone else here does,

If anyone is interested, I fixed the problem by deleting the C80 network
printer and then adding it back to my list of available printers. It was
suggested (after the fact) by a tech on the Corel group, who also suggested
deleting the drivers for that printer, although it seems that wasn't
necessary for the fix.
