I am using the free Zonlab version for firewall and have windows firewall
turned off in fear of creating a conflict between the two.
Can they coexist?

It's not a good idea to have two software firewalls. You incur
needless extra overhead and you run the risk of conflicts between
them.

Why would you want to run two firewalls? You need only one. Windows'
firewall is a two-way stateful packet inspection firewall which runs just
fine.

Using 2 firewall is as wearing 2 shoes on 1 feet.

Educational reading:
For the average homeuser, the Windows Firewall in XP does a fantastic job
at its core mission and is really all you need if you have an 'real-time'
anti-virus program, [another firewall on your router or] other edge
protection like SeconfigXP and practise Safe-Hex.
The windows firewall deals with inbound protection and therefore does not
give you a false sense of security. Best of all, it doesn't implement lots
of nonsense like pretending that outbound traffic needs to be monitored.

Activate and utilize the Win XP built-in Firewall; Uncheck *all* Programs
and Services under the Exception tab.

In conjunction with WinXP SP2 Firewall use:
Seconfig XP 1.0
http://seconfig.sytes.net/
Seconfig XP is able configure Windows not to use TCP/IP as transport
protocol for NetBIOS, SMB and RPC, thus leaving TCP/UDP ports 135, 137-139
and 445 (the most exploited Windows networking weak point) closed.

You are not going to find anything better than the Vista FW and Vista in

I very like MS unicorn existency analogy.
It is true.

But I would admit this:

No antiX software can grant you 100% security, by principle.

And it is very dangerous to feel safe,
believing in being secured by SW.

Neither Antimalware, neither SW firewalls, neither HIPS,
neither Antivirus, ( and even neither HW firewalls )
can keep you safe.

But Why people even bother themselves to use them ?

Lets suppose there would be vaccination against AIDS
or other lethal disease, that would safe you against infection
in 95% of cases (just number ).

Would you reject it, just because not being 100%. ?

Yes, you can admit better is save behavior, no promiscuity,
in case of being homosexual then permanent partner and AIDS tests
etc etc.

You are right.

BUT
You can do all of that and still can get infected.
Not/Bad tested flood transfer, sex with infected your first love,
contamination in test laboratory or by blood at traffic accident...

So you can get infected at "Safe Hex".

Using protection, while I KNOW it is NOT 100 %
has same importance as
NOT BELIEVING that SW can keep me safe.

The opposites ( Not using and Believing )
are nonsenses and foolishness of the same rank.
