Windows Firewall Hangs Normal Boot

I am working on a friend's computer that won't boot to normal mode with the
Windows Firewall service enabled. It hangs on the Windows XP splash screen
shortly after resetting the keyboard and before going to the logon screen.
I have used MSConfig to disable everything execpt the firewall and it still
hangs. If I enable everything except the firewall it boots fine. I can
boot to safemode OK. Once the system boots normally without the firewall, I
can enable the firewall without problems, but then when I reboot it with the
service enabled it again hangs.

Anybody got any suggestions where to go from here?

The problem you describe is not refering to Windows firewall.
It appears because of another security software installed which get on with
bad with Windows Firewall as there are more than 2 firewalls =>bad!!!

Does this computer have security software connected to
Norton , McAfee , Panda , Kaspersky , Trend Micro , ZoneAlarm , Kerio ,
Sygate ,Windows Defender , OneCare or something like that which includes
malware protection or firewall protection ( intrusion detection system) ?

If the answer is YES, your friend should choose which one to use because
Norton , McAfee , Panda, Trend (and KAV) includes firewall protections in
them .Zone Alarn , Kerio , Sygate or Norton/McAfee firewalls are firewalls by
them selves...

There is no other firewall installed. The only other security software
installed is eTrust AV (only, no firewall) and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1,
both of which were disabled by MSConfig when I tested the Windows Firewall
only configuration. From MSConfig, I disabled ALL options (services,
startup, Win.ini, System.ini, except for the 3 services MSConfig considers
essential), then enabled only the Windows Firewall. This system had been
running fine for a couple months with the firewall, AV and MS Antispyware
before it suddenly quit working a couple days ago.
