Windows failed to install Update for Office

I have XP running with auto update and I get the following errors:
1. Windows failed to install Update for Office 2003
2. Windows failed to install Update for Outlook Junk Email Filter

This is a Compaq computer with Office installed but never activated.
I would prefer to keep Office installed but not activated in the event
I want to activate later. These failed updates take several minutes
on shutdown everytime. Should I just uninstall Office?
Is there another solution?

Check your settings for Automatic Updates.
I'd advise, if you are using automatic updates, you configure it to notify you "before" downloading and
"before" installing. e.g. do not have it on "full auto".

I'm a bit curious as to why you do not activate Office. Is it the full version or is it a "trial" version?

There's no need to un-install anything.

Maurice,
Thanks for the reply.
As you suggested, I have updates set to full auto, as that was
MS recommended option. So, I guess that the "full auto" update does
not check if Office is activated? I will try your suggestion to notify
before download/update.
I suppose the Office is the full version. It was preinstalled on
this compaq, purchased 9/05. I have openOffice 2.0 installed,
and the few times I need Office utilities it is sufficient. Mainly
..doc viewing. I use OE for email, although lately I have used
it very little, instead using web mailers.

Bill,
I believe as long as Office is installed, W U /A U will check to see if security or critical updates are available.
Should you continue to have an issue with either Windows Updates / Microsoft Updates/ or Automatic updates, provide details and post to group microsoft.public.windowsupdate
