How do I permanently set Windows explorer to display
details only. I am not a fan of the icons and do not enjoy
resetting to details on every screen for every application.

Mike,

Set Details view for a folder and choose 'Apply to All Folders' in the Folder Options > View tab. If the settings are not saved, run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:

Did you mean the common dialog [open/save as] boxes. The views for open/save as are not retained [by design] and the above is applicable only for folders.
