System Restore doesn't work, it says unable to restore system to this point,
etc.
I tried all different dates to restore to and no luck. I remember once
while trying to get rid of a virus the McAfee site steps had me turn System
Restore off. This seems to have caused me to be unable to use system restore
now.
Any other advice!?!?

Another symptom of the problem, maybe unrelated I don't know, is that
whenever I shut down my computer a window pops up saying TaskBarWindow is not
responding choose end to end program now etc.

Please help!
Thanks - rctr

system RESTORE

I tried this, ran McAfee antivirus and adware remover in safe mode,
some viruses did show up and were deleted, but problem persists!
Any other suggestions?
Another symptom is that when I open Internet Explorer the little message box
always pops up and says IE has encountered a problem and needs to close, etc.
Please help!
Thanks!

:

Run Anti Virus software.
Run Anti spyware [ad ware] software.

Do this in safe Mode.

Delete all the crud you find and then reboot.

:

I cannot get Windows Explorer to open.
When I click on the icon nothing happens and my computer freezes for about
30 seconds. In fact, I cannot open any of the things that pop up when you
click on the Start button, on the right hand side, such as My Documents, My
Pictures, My Music, My Computer, even the Control Panel.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Hi,

Check to see if System Restore is enabled.
How to Disable and Enable System Restore
http://home.earthlink.net/~mvp_bert/html/disablesr.html

Confirm that the Task Scheduler and System Restore Service are
running:

Click Start, click Run, and then type CMD then press enter.
Type Net Start at the command prompt and press enter. Make sure
that the Task Scheduler service is up and running.
To start the Task Scheduler Service.
Go to Start - Run and type Services.msc then press enter.
Double click on Task Scheduler
Set 'Startup type' to Automatic then press Start and Wait for
the Service Control progress indicator to close.
Do the same if the System Restore Service was missing. Close
the Services window.

Report back with your findings.

Yes System Restore was and is enabled.
I know that in the past I had disabled it once trying to get rid of a virus,
but have since had it enabled.
The Task Scheduler and System Restore Service are running.
Both were already on automatic.

Please continue helping!
Thanks! rctr

Hi,

It could be that one of the restore points has become corrupt. Once
one restore point becomes corrupt a restore points prier to that one
will be corrupt also. In this case the only alternative is to delete
them all by turning SR off then on again. This will automatically
create a restore point. Try restoring to that restore point to confirm
it is working correctly.

OK I turned System Restore off and then on again.
Then I restored to the newly created point and it restored OK
to that point. So System Restore appears to be working.
However the initial problem remains, I cannot open Windows Explorer or,
actually
any of the things that you see when you click on the Start button, on the

Glad to see System Restore is fixed.

Go to Start - Run and type explorer then press enter. Does Windows
Explorer open?

If it does the problem could be the shortcut file association is
broken. To fix this go to the link below, download and run this fix.

OK I did Start - Run - explorer and Windows Explorer did not open.
It did the same thing that it has been doing when I try to click on the
Windows Explorer icon, everything freezes for about 30 seconds, all the
desktop icons then disappear as do the things on the right side of the
taskbar on the bottom, then they all come back up after another 10 seconds or
so.

Please continue helping!!

May God bless you Thalamus and the people who made those 2 programs!
After months of frustration and fruitless attempts at fixing the problem,
you finally had the solution. I can't thank you enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do a repair install and you won't lose anything.
