Windows Explorer View Error

T

TMitchell

For reasons I can't explain, Windows Explorer (W2K SP4 OS) has started
to not show the entire system tree (drives, folders, My Documents, My
Network Places, Recycle Bin, etc.) in the left window pane (it is now a
grayed out blank area), but still shows items normally in the right pane
(the subfolder views of whatever item is highlighted in the left pane,
which in my case is the default "My Documents" item, as it is the first
default item highlighted in the left pane that can no longer be viewed.
Hope my description is not too confusing.

Can someone please tell me what is going on and how to get Windows
Explorer to show the system tree items in the left pane again?

Thank you.

Copy the lines below into a file named 'IEReg.bat' and double click it to
run it. This will reregister some DLLs for IE and the operating system.
Restart for effect.

Thank you. You are this forum's white knight, always coming to the rescue.

Should the file be saved in NotePad, WordPad or what, and should in be a
..txt file?

Also, I note that this references IE, as in Internet Explorer. But I
assume this will solve my Windows Explorer view issue, yes?

Copy the text and paste in a file (notepad.exe). Save it with a BAT or CMD
extension so the command shell processor can interpret it.

That worked like a charm. Thank you.

Question, whatever happened to cause the problem, might it also be the
cause of my Add/Remove Programs no longer working when I click on it?

1.) Some registrations were broken.

2.) From the "Run" box try;
regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\appwiz.cpl

regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\webvw.dll
to rebuild several *.htt files

If unsuccessful try
sfc /purgecache
sfc /scannow

Or try the regedits described in;

I ran the first four suggested action, and Add/remove Programs still
does not function. I am going to try the in-place upgrade next.
But before I do, I have a couple of questions.

Were the third and fourth actions suppose to generate an information
log, or were they just behind-the-scenes actions?

Is it normal behavior after performing the third and fourth actions that
upon reboot svchost.exe would consume up to 99% of CPU resources for
about five or so minutes?

Given that the W2K disk I used in performing the third and fourth
actions was the original release, am I supposed to have re-installed SP4
afterwards?

*** SFC? Here's some detail on the tool.

*** Probably not. You might check Event Viewer for errors.

*** If you meant SFC then no, shouldn't be necessary.
