Windows Explorer unexpected actions

When I am in Windows Explorer:-

If I select a file and edit the title - OK.

If I select a file and try to delete it - Explorer closes down. The action
also closes down other background programmes such as Disk Detector and
music/volume controls. It does not close down Norton Anti-virus or Sygate
Firewall.

If I select a file and right click the mouse for the extended menu, Explorer
closes down. The action also closes down other background programs such as
Disk Detector and music/volume controls. It does not close down Norton
Anti-virus or Sygate Firewall.

If I run the latest Norton Anti-virus software, no problems are found.

What's happening?

Help....
is there nobody out there who has had this very annoying problem? Has anyone
any suggestions on what to try - I've looked at all running applications and
can't see anything strange, but I don't know what else to do without wiping
everything and starting again, an option I daren't think about.
