windows explorer slowed to crawl

Since my last defrag, windows explorer takes about 20 to 30 seconds to
load. It used to be almost instantaneous. It now loads with the
right pane totally transparent, and after about 20-30 seconds, the
folder names appear. I've run spybot, and there were a few problems
which I subsequently fixed.

I have tweaked the command for WE to expand C:\ on opening, and I've
moved all of my special folders (my documents - music - video etc.) to
the root directory. Could this be part of the problem?
