Windows Explorer shares get rid of

T

tshad

I am having problems with my XP File system, especially in Office 2007.

In Windows explorer I have a bunch of shares showing below "My Network
Places" and "Entire Network" that don't exist. I keep getting "Network Path
was not found" when I try to select it or right click it(after about 30
seconds).

I am trying to get rid of them.

How do I do this?

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Are they shares or drives? If drives, have you right-clicked and
selected "Disconnect"?

If shares, right click on My Computer and select "Manage". Under System
tools, Shared folders, Shares, right click on the non-existent shares
and select "Stop Sharing".

They are shares but not shares on my machine, but old shares of old machines
(not a mapped drive).

It will be something like:

Customers on CompanyServer

where the share is Customers on the CompanyServer.

but that server isn't there anymore, but my Windows Explorer is showing them
and if I click on it (left or right) it will freeze for about a minute then
come back saying that the network path was not found.

But when I close the window and try again I get the same problem. I think
this is causing some of my slowness problem as there are about 4 shares like
this.

I think when you bring up a Windows Explorer window, it takes a while
because it is waiting to see if it can connect.

There is one that I would like to not get rid of as it will be there when I
connect my VPN, but I want it to not keep checking if it is there. I do
want it there when I connect my VPN. I don't want to have to remember what
the share was. Is there a way to do this?

Thanks,

Tom

Explorer is trying to connect, and that is the main reason for the
delay. Remember, even the one missing via the VPN will cause a
significant delay. It would be better to create a script that you can
launch from the Desktop to connect to the network share while using the VPN.

First create a Restore Point. Then

open regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\WorkgroupCrawler\Shares

Are the shares listed there? If so, remove them. Also check:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\lanmanserver\Shares
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\lanmanserver\Shares
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet004\Services\lanmanserver\Shares
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Shares

Are the shares listed there? If so, remove them.

Report back,
