Windows Explorer is CRASHING!!!

SAM

I come from the distant land known as Los Angeles ;)

*LOL*

A strange and alien place indeed!

First, I have some new info.

After my little adventure with IomegaWare installation,
some new error entries were made to the application log.

They are as follows:

Type Date Time Source Category Event User
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Error 4/13/2005 8:34:03 PM rasctrs None 2001 N/A
_._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._
The description for Event ID ( 2001 ) in Source ( rasctrs ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message
DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information
is part of the event: The event log file is corrupt..
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Error 4/13/2005 8:34:03 PM PerfNet None 2002 N/A
_._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._
Unable to open the Redirector service. Redirector performance data will not
be returned. Error code returned is in data DWORD 0.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Error 4/13/2005 8:34:03 PM PerfNet None 2004 N/A
_._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._
Unable to open the Server service. Server performance data will not be returned.
Error code returned is in data DWORD 0.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Error 4/13/2005 8:34:03 PM PerfDisk None 1000 N/A
_._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._._
Unable to open the Disk performance object. Status code returned is data DWORD 0.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

So it would seem that rasctrs, PerfNet, and PerfDisk might be at the root of this issue.

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to purge them from my system.
(Maybe editing the registry?)

We also have the system log errors that I listed in the first post to this thread:
..-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

..-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

I also noticed that there are a few device errors:

Device PNP Device ID Error Code
Ethernet Controller PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_3106&SUBSYS_01051106&REV_86\3&61AAA01&0&60 28
Ethernet Controller PCI\VEN_10B7&DEV_9300&SUBSYS_2C0217F2&REV_31\3&61AAA01&0&68 28

I don't know if those would have any impact or not.

I'm pretty sure the errors you're seeing in the event log are not related.
The errors in your Event log are largely caused by Performance Counters
failing to load which is something that can be safely ignored and if the
service isn't enables can even be expected. That's not to say one of those
event log errors can't be a clue, it just seems more like a shell issue to me.

I think this is caused by either a permissions error or something that I'll
only stumble upon after poking around the machine (no guarantee that I'll
find the answer but that's my best bet for figguring this out).

I have been experiencing the similiar problems with Windows Explorer on a
Windows 2000 Server system this morning and began troubleshooting according
to these posts. However, I discovered that we had 6 print jobs that had
failed but were spooled in a 3rd party print mangement solution we have
installed on that server. These jobs had dates ranging throughout the past
year. I deleted those six jobs and all seems to be OK.

This may not help you at all, but like you, I was assuming the fault was
with the OS but it was the 3rd party stuff hosing up the OS.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info Derek (and I think you're right - baring corruption the
culprit is going to be a 3ed party). Thanks again.

Hi Nick,

I've pulled the hard drive for the problem system, put in another one,
wiped it clean, and made a fresh install of Windows 2000
- I'll get back to the problem system later.
(I've got a friend who really needs this system, and I need to move forward.)

BTW: All of my hard drives are in removable cartidges, with the proper
receivers in the system units - so switching them around is a piece of cake.

I have junk worming around on my Problem PC that doesn’t belong
- and it’s there in spite of my anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall
- much to my consternation.

What I would like to do is to figure out a way
to maintain a list - of apps, processes, DLL’s, whatever
- for everything that is on this fresh system
- for auditing purposes.

Then, every time I install something, generate
a new list with all of the new stuff that’s supposed
to be on the system.

DO you have any ideas as to the best way to go about doing this?

I have some ideas - nothing off the top of my head that would be 100% but
there are some keys in the registry you could monitor for system dll's and
such - ill put together a list and get back to you - good ieas.
