Windows Explorer crashes in certain folders

Mat

Hi,

I've been having a problem with Windows Explorer crashing
whenever I access certain folders. It is very consistent
and always bombs out while looking at the same directory.

I have an identical copy of the folder on my backup hard-
drive which I can access OK. I've tried deleting the
problem directory and copying the good backup over, but
the problem still occurs.

I have all the latest patches, hotfixes and other security
updates. Some of the updates sounded like they may address
this problem but it still happens.

Any ideas? Your help would be much appreciated.

Getting very frustrated having re-installed my OS and
spent nearly 8 hours twiddling.

Mat.

Hi there Mat,

well just like I always told others, wipe your hard disk
and install linux. Linux never gives this crap as
Microsoft does.

What STUPID, HOPELESS and very BAD piece of advice of advice to give the
chap. If you can't make sensible suggestions, why just keep your mouth shut
? As for Linux, that's just as much rubbish as your stupid piece of advice.

Schedule a Scandisk in case there's a FAT / filename problem. Right-click
the drive on which the problem folder lives | Properties | Tools | Scandisk
in the Error checking section click "Check Now" You'll be advised that a
Scandisk will be scheduled for your next Windows session. Disable your
anti-virus software from auto-starting at this next reboot. (Don't forget
to turn it back on again when you've finished. Does that fix it ?

Do you have a shortcut to this/these folders set up on your desktop? Does
explorer crash when going in via the shortcut but not when going in via My
Computer -> C: etc..?

If so delete the short cut and re-create it by going to the folder via My
Computer etc and right click -> create shortcut.

Doing this fixed my problem.

Thanks Colin and Richard.

Neither of your ideas worked but at least they gave me a
small glimmer of hope unlike our right honorable MR.T
who's suggestion to turn to Linux is a little less than
useful. Maybe he moves apartments when the light bulbs
burn out too.

Thanks again.

Mat.

P.S. - I'm seeing more and more people raising this same
question so I'm sure it won't be long before someone
figures it out.
