Windows Easy Transfer - migration failed

Four times now, a transfer has failed at the same point -- at the point when
the message:

Saving HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences\VideoSettings...

has appeared during the process.

The lack of information provided is enraging. "The migration failed." No
suggestion if provided as to what to do to address the problem. "Windows
Easy Transfer will now be cancelled." [OK]

Gee, thanks a lot.

Those messages appear on the Windows XP Home computer. On the Windows Vista
Home Premium computer, the messages indicate that something has broken the
connection, and that the changes will not be saved.

Yet, it is apparent that folders and files have been copied and saved.

What evidently may not be saved are registry settings.

Are there any suggestions as to how to fix this?

I forgot to include certain information -- I was attempting to complete the
transfer using a crossover CAT5 cable, connected between the two computers'
network adapters. The adapters were set to different IP addresses in the
same subnet (mask set to 255.255.255.0), and the firewalls and antivirus and
antispyware programs were disabled. On the Windows XP Home computer, all but
the most essential services were disabled (in particular: all Firewall,
Antivirus, Antispyware, and Scheduled Tasks were disabled), and screen saver
and power options were turned of on both computers.

In an attempt to get through this blockage, I unchecked the Windows Media
Player settings, so they would not be transferred. For good measure, I
exported the registry setings for
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Preferences (on the Windows XP Home
computer) and then deleted the key. I also unchecked all the Documents and
Other Folders (which appear to have already been transferred, despite the
"selections will not be saved" message of the previous failed attempts).

In this way, I was able to finally finish a transfer.
