Windows Easy Transfer: "Insert first disk into drive" w/ ext. HD?

Hi!

First, please accept my apologies if this is in the wrong place-- I couldn't
quite tell if Easy Transfer should go into Vista Install/Setup, or Hardware,
or here. So I took the most general place.

Now for my question: I'm using WET to get files off of an XP-based PC onto
my Vista. I'm using a 6GB external hard drive to transfer the files. The hard
drive attaches via USB cable.

I can get the old files onto the hard drive (into a .MIG file) just fine,
but when I execute it on the Vista machine, it asks me first to insert the
media from which to read, and then when I do so and click the drive (J:\,
though it shouldn't matter), it tells me to (rough quotation) "Please insert
the first disk to read into the drive you have selected." That makes
absolutely no sense to me, as it's an external hard drive, and you can't
exactly fit a disk in there. When I remove and reinsert the hard drive, all
that happens is that J:\ disappears from the drive list, then reappears; upon
trying again I then find that nothing changes.

I'm rather confused... what is it that I am missing?

Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, but that unfortunately did not change anything.

I don't think the drive is the problem, as I can access everything in it
just fine, and I even did some manual copying/pasting of other things on
there. It reads and writes just fine. The problem seems to be more along the
lines of how Windows Easy Transfer perceives the drive itself, as if it
things I'm using a removable CD-ROM drive or whatever... though I'm sure I'm
just missing something obvious here.

Thanks for the help so far!
