Windows Easy Transfer from XP to Vista Help Please

First a comment: I have been finding it maddening difficult to find info on
this procedure. Windows seems to assume it's so easy there "aren't gonna be
problems!"

Have been attempting to transfer the settings from a Dell Machine running XP
SP2 to a new machine running Windows Vista Home Premium. Everything appears
to be successfully installed. When presented with the selection of the
program to run on the Dell we pick "transfer files and settings." Then the
first screen "Welcome to Windows Easy Transfer" is presented. Clicking the
"next" button goes nowhere. A check with Windows Task Manager shows the
application "not to be running."

We've tried doing this through the LAN we have. We've gotten an "easy
transfer" cable and the results are the same. We've checked all connections.
And we've double, triple, quadruple, etc checked the procedures.

We've logged onto each computer under an Administrator account. We've
checked that no firewalls are active. Though it would seem the Dell acts as
if some firewall is still there. We've disabled anti-virus software.

So far nothing we've tried has changed what happens: the program on the Dell
stops responding and never goes to the next page which is supposed to be a
selection of the method for the transfer.

Anyone got any ideas on what to look at, or what could be going on?

As I indicated in my post, I am not getting past the "Welcome..." screen of
Easy Transfer and that IS the problem I am trying to overcome. Your answer
suggests that I would be getting to the second screen "Choose how to transfer
files ..." which would give me the option of doing it by CD. This isn't even
a good option for this computer that has several gigs to transfer. But
again, I am not getting past the welcome screen. I click next and the
"Windows Easy Transfer" program ceases to respond.

Still looking for any insight.
