Windows Desktop Search

How does one access Windows Desktop Search? I see it installed in
Add/Remove Programs, but there is no control on my Desktop, or in
ToolBars on the TaskBar. Neither is there any way to access the
control from within any installed program, Microsoft or third-party.

I have version 6.00.5361.0000 installed, supposedly.

Thanks, Wesley, but absolutely none of these help me to actually
access Windows Desktop Search once I've installed it.

There is NO Search Bar of ANY KIND appearing ANYWHERE. In addition,
there is NO entry for Windows Desktop Search in my Start Menu.

I do NOT want to use MSN search for ANYTHING, at ANYTIME. I despise
MSN. I despise ANYTHING having to do with MSN, and I dispise Windows
Messenger, as well as MSN Messenger. I have COMPLETELY uninstalled
ANYTHING having to do with MSN Messenger or Windows Messenger, and
have no intention of reinstalling either of them, until they allow
direct IP connections apart from their servers, so that my brother and
I can communicate via our local wireless network. He runs only OS X,
and I run only XP. He refuses to use any client except iChat via
Bonjour.

Please show me how to access Windows Desktop Search once it is
installed (it currently is installed).

Thanks, Wesley.

Something tells me you won't be "MS-MVP of the Year" anytime soon.
I certainly hope so, at least.

Try this.

Right click the Taskbar and select Toolbars, Windows Desk Searchbar

Nothing on the Start Menu?

Windows key + F ??

windowssearch.exe = Windows Desktop Search Tray located some where in
%programfiles%

Possibly
C:\Program Files\MSN Toolbar
Suite\DS\02.02.0000.1007\en-us\bin\WindowsSearch.exe
or
C:\Programmer\MSN Toolbar
Suite\DS\02.02.0000.1007\en-us\bin\WindowsSearch.exe

Also WindowsSearchIndexer.exe

Actually, if there were such an award, Wes would be a definite
contender.

As for your question, go to Add/Remove Programs.
Click on Windows Desktop Search.
Click on "Click here for support information".
In the box that pops up, click on the "Support Information"
link.
You should end up here:

Description of Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Engine Preview
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=917013

The version you have installed on your system is available
here:

Windows Desktop Search 3.0 Beta Engine Preview (KB917013)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...53-6e20-4cf7-8bfc-1cac7f35da49&displaylang=en

Of note in this article are two items, "Beta" and "does not
include full desktop UI". UI stands for User Interface. What
that means is that it's not a standalone program. This version
is offered when you first start Outlook 2007 Beta. That's how
it ended up on my test system.

If you want a standalone version of Windows Desktop search, you
might want to uninstall the version on your computer and
install an earlier version. Take a look at this article for
more info:

Windows Desktop Search 2.6.5 (KB911993)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...2C-6E02-4596-89D4-05E94F7FBCE1&displaylang=en

Good luck

Thank you, sir. At least I now know that the Search Engine does not
include a full desktop GUI at this current time.

I do have Office 2007 Beta installed. I was not offered the choice to
install even the current search engine.

Even with the Windows Indexing Beta Engine installed, there is no
control within Outlook to access it.

Anyway, I perceive that it is mostly for Vista, rather than XP.
So I will uninstall it, since it is doing me no good. I guess if I
want to use it, I will either have to reinstall Vista Beta 2 (but I
only have the publicly-available beta, which is pretty raunchy), or
install MSN Messenger, which I do NOT want to do.

I guess if I want to do a swift search of my computer, I will have to
boot into OS X. SpotLight works great. Too bad Microsoft doesn't
have a similar control for our Desktops built in to XP, as SpotLight
is.

Why does Apple have to develop all the "good stuff" first? Why can't
Microsoft? They have the necessary tools and resources to be the very
best OS on the Market. But XP is still stuck mostly in the 90s (but
on the other hand, OS X's desktop is still stuck in 1983).

Anyway, thanks...

So after you uninstall the version that's currently installed
on your computer, you might want to try the version that's
offered here by clicking on "Download Desktop Search without
the Toolbar".

Windows Desktop Search
http://desktop.msn.com/

You should end up here:

Windows Desktop Search 2.6.5
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...2C-6E02-4596-89D4-05E94F7FBCE1&displaylang=en

Scroll to the bottom and download this file,
WindowsDesktopSearch-kb911993-V2-x86-ENU.exe

This version will put an entry on your Start menu. You can also
have it accessible through your Taskbar.

Good luck
