Windows Desktop Search 3.0 fails to install

After installing Office 2007 beta 2 I opened Outlook 2007 and was met with a
window informing me I needed to download and install Windows Desktop Search
3.0 in order to obtain complete search functionality.

The WDS 3.0 installation fails near the end with a pop-up window stating
"Access Denied". I tried twice with and without the Windows firewall enabled.

For the time being I have unchecked Outlook startup warnings.

When I try to install the Windows Desktop Search on my Windows X64 I get a
Windows Desktop Search Setup Error that says "This Windows Desktop Search is
for a different hardware platform."

the desktop search is only available in 32bit format right now - so you're
stuck with outlook's native (slow) search.

I can't find the original post which says:

"For the time being I have unchecked Outlook startup warnings. "

Where does one uncheck Outlook startup warnings?

I found out the problem of the "access denied" error. It seems that on
some machines (like mine), some registry permissions are set so that
they cannot be changed by anyone. Some examples are:
HKCR\.scd
HKCR\.sch
HKCR\.wll
HKCR\.csv

After finding this out (using regmonnt) and not knowing how many other
permissions were wrong, I added the Administrators to the HKCR root
(probably not the safest way, but hey, it works). After that, the
installation went fine.

I had the same problem. I traced it back to security permissions on a number
of registry keys. By manually adjusting the permissions on these keys I was
able to get the install to complete successfully.

You will need to give your account, or the group your account is a member
of, Full Control permissions on the following registry keys:

HKCR\.wll
HKCR\.csv
HKCR\.mdb
HKCR\.msg
HKCR\.tif
HKCR\.pps
HKCR\.rtf

The installer attempts to create a subkey called PersistentHandler on each
of the above keys, and if it is unable to, it will fail with the Access
Denied error.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the same issue or not, but I can't find anything
that relates to what I'm experiencing any closer so here is my problem:

After installing outlook 2007 it promted me to install the new 3.0WDS
engine, I already had the 2.6.5 version installed. After downloading the
program I installed it without error. However it doesn't seem to have changed
the version numbers in the options of my desktop search options. The errors
I'm experiencing are:

1) The instant search feature in outlook reports a "outlook cannot perform
your search" error for whatever search quiery I enter.
2) The advances search keeps looking indefinately without finding anything.
3) If I set the instant search to search all folders I get: "The messaging
interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists restart
outlook" which is very strange.
4) The desktop search (still version 2.6.5 apparently) now only finds
outlook items but won't let me preview or open any of them. If this is by
design I would like to know as I'll go back to 2.6.5 to regain normal search
features which I use a lot!

Ok thats all I've notices. Please please please help me. I don't understnad
what happened. I imagine its a fault with the WDS3 engine but I need someone
wiser to guide me.

Thank you in advance.
Jack

can you point me to where in the HKCR to find the above?

Hi Jack, see below:
1) The instant search feature in outlook reports a "outlook cannot
perform your search" error for whatever search quiery I enter.
2) The advances search keeps looking indefinately without finding
anything.
3) If I set the instant search to search all folders I get:
"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists restart outlook" which is very strange.

I'm experiencing the same problems (1-3). I haven't found a solution yet,
but I'm suspicious there's a configuration error in the new indexing
service. I noticed I can configure this from the Control Panel, but I don't
have any information about would be the appropriate set of configuration
options (such as which folders and file extensions to include/exclude).

FYI, it seems installing WDS 3.0 completely removed my previous version (it
sounds like you still have the old version available).

Tor.

Hello. I had precisely the problem you both describe, and solved it as follows:

1) Close Outlook
2) Uninstall Desktop Search via Add/Remove Programs, and REBOOT
3) Download and install Desktop Search v2.6, and REBOOT
4) Download and install Desktop Search v3, and REBOOT

Finally, after the odd procedure above I was able to go into Tools, Options,
Search in Outlook and select my Personal Folders and Archive Folders as
places to be indexed.

Simply reinstalling Desktop Search 3 or removing and reinstalling it didn't
do the trick -- the exact procedure above did it for me.

I am trying to install Windows Desktop Search 3.0 as well and keep
getting the error that access is denied.

I tried to follow your instructions to change the permission setting in
the registry. I could not find the settings that you listed in the
registry.

Could you be a little bit more specific please so I can find these
settings and change them?

Thank you!

I run find uder view for HKCR and found nothing. Would you please be more
specific where these registry keys are located.

Thanks.

This did not work for me, and pulling up the file with the error in it
revealed no registry key numbers; it did not reflect what the MS solution
said it would. Any other ideas?
