Windows Defrag. Does This Look Normal?

Monica

I did a disk defrag last night and was surprised to see the "estimated disk
usage before" look like this (link below).
For some reason, it just looked different from what I'm used to seeing. It
is a new system that's only been in operation since
mid March. Maybe that's it. What prompted the defrag was a slow down in
some programs opening and Windows shutting down

I see nothing to worry about.

You should run Disk CleanUp (or better still cCleaner) before running Disk
Defragmenter. Did you?

I wish MY defrag report looked like that.

If you are having problems (you said performance and Windows shutting
down), the problems may be related to something else besides a
fragmented disk.

Don't shoot from the hip to try to solve a problem - figure out what
the problem is and fix it.

"Windows shutting down" is not enough to go on. Try to explain what
you are trying to do and what you are seeing when Windows shuts
down.

What programs are opening slow? Did they ever work to your
satisfaction?

Did this just start happening?

Yeah, I didn't word that too well did I. That's what happens when I'm up
WAY too late.
When I got this Dell XPS 420 computer in mid March, I reformatted the
(Vista) hdd and put and unbranded XP SP 2 on it and then
added SP3. I disabled MANY of the services, had processes down to about 29
and only 3 items checked in msconfig startup. Computer runs great. It's
been zipping along so fast that it waits on ME <lol> Turning off the
computer,
Windows shut down in probably 10 seconds or less. Something I've added in
the last
week or so is causing the system to take over 30 seconds to for the computer
to shut down. An update from
(free) Avast v4.8? An update from the free (Anniversary Edition) of
Adaware? The new HP AIO? My msconfig checked items are now
up to 8 (they must stay checked for programs to work the way I want them
to). Processes, with OE open are 43. I haven't recently
checked to see if there are more services I can disable. The reason I ran a
defrag is because that's the least invasive and easiest...don't
consider that "shooting from the hip" :) The answer is here somewhere, I
just have to find it and the first thing I did was a defrag...it didn't
help.
Now I'll move on to something else.

No, I didn't run Disk Clean up first. I usually do. It was late and
someone wasn't thinking clearly  I'll do that now and
rerun the defrag. I have cCleaner but haven't installed it. Somewhat leery
of these registry cleaners.

A fragmented disk will NOT cause a Windows shutdown. If using NTFS, no
amount of fragmentation will generate a noticeable slowdown.

Look elsewhere for a solution to those two problems.

Monica-
Disable the "Adwatch Live" in the new Adaware Anniversary Edition.
It added 45 seconds to my shutdown time & once I disabled that, the computer doesn't
hang when I turn it off.
