Comodo has firewall for vista and its free, no antivirus yet.
If you want to spend few dollars/euros for safe, check out GData and
BitDefender, forget Norton or F-Secure.

Windows Defender is adequate for spyware.
Windows Firewall is a good firewall for Home use,
You also need an anti-virus, preferably not McAfee or Norton. Avast!
(www.avast.com) is free for Home users.

Not even close. While Vista's built-in firewall is usually quite
satisfactory for most home consumer's needs, Windows Defender is only a
"less-than-stellar" anti-adware and anti-spyware product. It has no
anti-virus capabilities, whatsoever. You should consider adding both
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions. It's even possible
to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your system against most
future intrusions. You'll also need some sort of anti-virus application.

mcafee came with the system but many people say it slows down the
system immensely.

It does.

You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you will responses.

I'll start by saying that I don't think any security "suite" is a
good choice. It'd be better to use smaller, less-resource-draining
stand-alone products. And, having had personal experience with
Verizon's business practices, I certainly wouldn't trust anything they
offer. Even if the product/service itself is fine, there'll be hidden
costs and "unadvertised" conditions and limitations associated with it.

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all without
any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that. But it's
been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee products. Their
quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they were acquired by
Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially
higher than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less
expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of
GriSoft's AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ). It proved
to be easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally,
I was pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable
improvement in my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec
product. Another free (for personal use) anti-virus product is AVAST! 4
Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html), which is what
I'm currently using without problems on Vista Business.

For a recent comparison of anti-virus products:

this system is already very slow, i despise vista.

Why blame Vista?

What are the system's hardware specifications? Does it have at least
2GB of RAM? Bear in mind that the A135 is pretty much from the lowest
end of the scale; it can't be expected to have outstanding performance.

just wondering if uninstalling mcafee would help ....

Yes, as long as you replace it with another anti-virus application.

... and if defender
is suitable protection ....

Definitely not.
... or if there is a more suitable software protection out
there. thank you

As above.

Not even close. Besides exercising care and practicing safe hex, you
need three kinds of software for good protection.

1. A firewall

2. Anti-virus software

3. Anti-spyware software.

You have the first covered with Windows Firewall, and the third
*partially* covered (see below) with Defender. But with just those
two, you have no anti-virus software at all.

mcafee came with the system but many people say it slows down the
system immensely.

Many people are right. Next to Norton, McAfee is probably the worst
anti-virus product on the market, and slowing down the system is only
one of its problems. Try Avast!, AVG, or NOD32.

Regarding anti-spyware software, note that a single anti-spyware
product--even the best one--is *not* good enough. Note what Eric
Howes, who has done extensive testing on Anti-Spyware products,
states:

"No single anti-spyware scanner removes everything. Even the
best-performing anti-spyware scanner in these tests missed fully one
quarter of the "critical" files and Registry entries" See
http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

Over and above the anti-virus and firewall programs, I recommend some
combination of at least two or three of the following (all free):

Spybot Search and Destroy
Adaware
Spyware Blaster
Windows Defender
Super Antispyware

Personally, I am perhaps extra cautious, but I run all of those.

How much RAM does it have and what apps do you run on it? Vista needs
more hardware than XP, and many people unfortunately have bought
systems that are greatly underpowered for Vista.

Jefs7,

Have you removed all the crapware that came installed on your computer,
including McAfee? Have you disabled the numerous startup programs that have
no need to run at startup? How many programs do you unnecessarily run after
your operating system is in use?

How much memory do you have? I would suggest a minimum of 1GB and preferably
2GB for starters. What are your performance settings? Is your computer set up
for performance or energy savings?

Do you have real time scanning in progress on more than one application? Do
you have two firewalls running at the same time? Does any of your security
software scan every file at opening and closing?

Vista is not the cause of your computer's slowness or lack of proper
response. The Vista on my main computer runs just as fast as the XP on my
other computers, although most people will disagree with me on this point.

I hope you show more patience with people than you do with your operating
system. Learn how to use it properly and you should have no problems. The
biggest problems with Vista are caused by the people using it. You are
causing yourself unneeded frustrations and aggravations. Please pardon my
bluntness.

Have a nice day.

C.B.
