Windows Defender was unable to complete the update 0x80072efd

The WindowsDefender Beta 2 will not connect to the internet to check for new
definitions. The internet is clearly working, as I am using it now. A bubble
pops up at the bottom of my screen saying "Windows Defender was unable to
complete the update 0x80072efd" I just installed the program and I am not a
computer whiz, so can someone please tell me how to connect it to the
internet to acquire new definitions and engine upgrades? Thank you.

I get the same problem. A little different error though.

"Windows Defender was unable to complete the update: 0x8007064c. The
installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source
exists and that you can access it."

I've done KB 915105 "Error message after you reinstall Windows Defender Beta
2: “Windows Defender definitions haven’t been updatedâ€

as this was my case before now I get the error message at the top of this
post. I've also uninstalled and re-downloaded and re-installed Windows
Defender as of today (2006/04/16).

This computer that it is giving the error worked until 3/30/06 (as of last
update) which then today I applied the above KB and like I mentioned earlier
didn't work so I uninstalled it and re-downloaded and installed it. Today I
also installed (clean, hasn't been installed) on another computer and it
works just fine. Not sure what the deal is.

I also took a screen shot thinking that there would be a way to post the
image on this discussion but of course not. Might want to change that to help
you guys out.

Can you go to Windows Update, do an Express scan, and apply all offered
updªtes
http://update.microsoft.com

Once that is finished, can you verify the update installs? There are many
pre-requisite files which are needed from windows update and signature
update with windows defender will fail until you hªve these files.

I hope this post is helpful.

Please , rate the pºsts.

No. Currently I get the following error:
"Installation FAILED!! Definition Update 1.14.1408.8 for BETA Windows
Defender (KB915597)"

I've tried it 3 times now. The first time i tried caused Windows OneCare and
Windows Defender to not work at all and I had to restart the computer and
cross my fingers that the installation didn't corrupt OneCare at all. Luckily
it started up fine.

I've also tried.

"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -RemoveDefinitions -All
"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate

This is getting really annoying, especially since it runs on 3 other
computers just fine!!! I was involved with beta testing Windows OneCare
almost a year ago and I never had any problems with that.

Why doesn't someone from microsoft post an executable to to completely
remove Windows Defender and all updates to it, so that we can try a clean
install.

I already solved this problem. What i did was as following:

Navigate to C:\program files\windows defender and delete MpAsDesc.dll

This is the definition file and once deleted, use windows update or
microsoft update to update your definitions. This worked for me since I get
the same error code every time when checking for updates using the Defender
software.

This indeed solved my problem.

Thanks.

That doesn't make much sense b/c I have IE 6 work on 2 of the 3 computers
that are running defender fine and 1 has IE 7 beta 2 on it. There is a bigger
issue than installing IE 7 beta 2.

That's very interesting, but I can assure you that it is in no way a
prerequisite or requirement for Windows Defender functionality. I have
Windows Defender running and updating on many machines which are not running
IE7 beta 2.

Thames, have you found a solution to this problem yet? I am having the same
problem. "Unable to complete the update ox8007064c. Install source for this
product is not available." I've also uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted a dll
file someone had suggested. No solution yet.
