Windows Defender Update 1.14.1720.4

It's been months since my definitions have been updated. Using update
buttons on WD screens have not been successful. I just happened to come
across notice that definition updates were routinely posted here. It's
beyond me why I have to access updates "through the back door," so to speak
.... but I'm glad at least to find a source! Thanks!

Now for the question ... I downloaded and ran definition update, but when I
view WD system info, I get the following:
version 1.1.1347.0
engine: 1.1.1303.0
definition: 1.0.0.0.
In other words, it appears that WD has not recognized the update. Did
reboot just in case, but no change. Have the definitions actually been
installed?

Here's how to get this straigtened out:

Find Engels most recent message which gives two different URL's to go from
zero to current.

download both files and save to a known location.

go to a command prompt in the Windows Defender install folder--typically
\program files\windows defender

type:

mpcmdrun -RemoveDefinitions -All

and hit enter.

Then click on the two downloaded files, in the order in which Engel has
posted them--there should be one whose name includes "mpas-f" which should
be the first.

That should get you current.

Well, this maybe a first ... I checked around and found answer to my own
question. In case your's is similar, I found the answer by checking the
"Spyware signatures" newsgroup shown on the left column. A post by Engel
with the same subject as mine gave directions on updating engine version and
definitions. Thanks Engel. Too bad there's so much overlap on the various
newsgroup topics ... but at least I'm finally running latest and greatest (?)
versions ...

This may be a first in that I've found the answer to my own question. Engel
posted links for updating engine and definition version under "Spyware
signatures" newsgroup topic. Too bad there's so much overlap in topics, but
at least persistence got me updated versions. Thanks!

Hello Maineman,

No Problem. glad to help. The guys on this forum have been a great help to
me so I try to pay back when I can.

Its very nice when someone does the research for themselves, rather than
posts a new message about something that has been posted before.
