Windows Defender Service

The OS of my laptop is xp. Every time turning it on or restarting it,
I always get following message in an alert box:

Application failed to intialize:0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows
Defender Service to stop. To start the service, restart your computer
or search Help and Support on how to start a service manually.

I didn't find information on how to start a service manually on Help
and Support. Can anyone in this group help me? Thanks.

At this time, support for Microsoft Windows Defender is being provided
through the following Microsoft newsgroups (which is where you'll find the
experts):

- microsoft.private.security.spyware.announcements
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.appcompat
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.general
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.install
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.networking
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.signatures
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.onlinecommunity

These newsgroups can be accessed via NNTP or HTTP.

To access these newsgroups using HTTP, please go to the following location:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/newsgroups/default.mspx

To access these newsgroups using NNTP, please use the following information
for your NNTP client (such as Microsoft Outlook Express):

- NNTP Server: privatenews.microsoft.com

My sincere thanks to all of you. Recently my computer becomes very
slow on the Internet. Desk applications are not affected. It is not
able to link to FTP and the Plesk control panel for my web site.
Clicks on many Internet pages are returned with 'The connection has
timed out.'

I contacted my web site server, and was told that there is a firewall
blocking the connectoin. I wonder whether or not this firewall is
related to the Windows Defender problem.

Recently the Norton anti-virus on my computer expired when I was out of
town. I didn't renew it on the Internet, because I had already ordered
a Norton CD. It was delivered to my house. As I am still traveling,
my laptop now has no anti-virus protection. I wonder whether this is
also related to the Windows Defender problem.

You guys provided me with quite a few links. But my computer is too
slow to open most of them.

Many thanks to everybody again.

my laptop now has no anti-virus protection.

Then the laptop is not safe to be connected to the internet or a network.

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

The error message indicates that you have an out of date copy of Windows Defender. Go to MS and
download the new "final release" version and install that copy.
