Windows Defender problem

I'm running Vista Ultimate X86 with Windows Defender v1.1.1505.0, engine
v1.1.2405.0, def v1.17.2450.6. Scanning turns up two items that I know
are safe and which I would like Defender to ignore on future scans.
Selecting the option of "Ignore" for each item, and then clicking the
"Apply Actions" button, results in the usual line of marching green ants
(to the tune of "Taking Actions . . ."), but the process of "Taking
Actions . . ." goes on forever and never takes (the same two items are
fingered again on subsequent scans). Does anyone know what the fix for
this is, if there is one?

Urge

Never mind. Turns out it was just one of those things that Vista needs ten
minutes to accomplish.
