Windows Defender does not start at programmed time

I hope I am posting to the correct newsgroup. If not, I will appreciate it
if someone will direct me to the right location.

I installed Windows Defender several months ago, and have had the same
problem (admittedly a very "small" problem) ever since. Defender is set to
run at 2:00 a.m. It often does, but it is just as likely run at what appear
to be randomized times. For example, it started just a few minutes ago.
The problem is that other programs frequently slow down when Defender is
running. I have a cable connection and leave my computer turned on at most
times -- so this is not a question of Defender running only after I boot up.

I am using a Compaq Presario 8000 computer running under Win XP-Home
Edition.

Thanks,
MaryL

Thanks for the information. I have tried to use some of Microsoft's
newsgroups and find them very awkward. The newsgroup I am posting to now
shows a large number of messages that I can easily scan. The newsgroups in
the link you posted are different. Only a few appear on the screen at a
time. There is a search engine, but that is only useful if I have the
correct term to use. My current question, for example, relates to why
Defender does not use the actual time specified, and that is not a specific
term. I also like the ability to mark certain threads for future reference.
So...are there any newsgroups similar to this one (that I am reading under
msnews.microsoft.com) for Windows Defender?

Thanks,
MaryL

Yes Mary you an access the Defender newsgroups through NNTP using Outlook
Express which is how you are accessing this windowsxp.general newsgroup.
The Defender newsgroups are on a different sever, however.

Here is the info to access those newsgroups.

NNTP Server: privatenews.microsoft.com
Account name: privatenews\spyware
Password: spyware

Here is a list of the Defender newsgroups on that server.

- microsoft.private.security.spyware.announcements
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.appcompat
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.general
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.install
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.networking
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.signatures
- microsoft.private.security.spyware.onlinecommunity

See Rock's reply, Mary. The information he posts is available on the page I
cited in my previous reply:
