The link is as follows:
{32bit}

http://download.windowsupdate.com/m..._b62edb71e42989ccd975f03937d9a319b9672bdf.exe
Size is only 147 KB, and it will not trigger a system restore point

As always, if you need the Full Engine and Full Defs update
[for example after a new install/reinstall of Defender]
you can get it at the Microsoft Malware Protection Center:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/
https://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Definitions/ADL.aspx
The full MPAS-FE is currently 12.6 MB

[As of this moment: (11:27am CST USA)
the "pushed" version and the portal version are in sync]

I d not want this update, I have set my automatic updates to recommend and
only download with permission. Windows keeps over riding this and
automatically downloading this update.
The update is present in my history, but does not appear in the edit/remove
updates option.
The only way I can get rid of it is by continuously doing system restores.
Once I have done a system restore the only way to keep this update out is to
turn off all automatic updating. Obviously this is not ideal.

How do I stop this update and how do I get rid of it.

First I need to ask, do you know what this update is for?
This is the update to the definition files of Windows Defender
AntiSpyWare/malWare.

Second I need to ask why you do not want to allow it?
If you do not allow updates to Windows Defender's Database it will not be
able to protect you.

If you want to be notified of and approve updates that's fine, I do the same
thing, in fact the link provided by this forum is intended for folks who
want/need that kind of control, or who have difficulties getting the update
thru normal channels

BUT if you Don't want to update Windows Defender at all, either manually
thru the link, or via WU/MS automatically or after approval, you should
disable Windows Defender completely.

This would be done by opening the WD interface and Unchecking the box that
says:

"Use Windows Defender",

You will find it by going to Tools -> Options and scrolling down to the
bottom of the page.
You can remove WD completely in WindowsXP but you can't in Vista.

Now, as to why you are getting updates without approval, I'm not sure.
Under Tools -> Options at the top do you have:

"Check for updated definitions before scanning" checked ?

If you have
"Automatically scan my computer" checked
AND
"Check for updated definitions before scanning" checked

that might be the reason; you would be telling WD,
"Yes, I want you to scan my computer on a schedule and Yes, I want you to
check for updates first".

Beyond that I'm not sure.
Also, by the way, there is never an option to remove updates to WD's
definition updates in the control panel,
It just doesn't work that way.

Hope that helps,

Tim
