Windows Defender becoming worse rather than better.

From the general tone of the threads, Windows Defender is rapidly becoming
less and less desirable - error messages, update problems, install/uninstall
problems. Generally, screwing up pc's - with little Microsoft attention to
these newsgroups.

I try to be calm and tell myself it's still a Beta program - but after
several hours of attempting to get Definition Update 1.14.1314.1 to install
properly - trying to fix it and not succeeding, I have become a cynic. Is
anyone in charge of the Definition Update Program in Microsoft ? If so, they
are handling it sort of like the Government handled Hurricane Katrina - very
badly. >>>>>>Off my soapbox!

I'd have to agree, John. I have yet to be able to update the thing
without a lot of hassle, which really puts me off bothering with the
program at all. Odd that they can't get that working properly.

Don`t despair `Mike Chan`has posted a message (or two) in these newsgroups.
Only goes to show MS reads, digests your input and works hard to resolve
those probs people may encounter. There have been major changes to coding
with BETA2 - so we can`t expect everything to work perfectly first time
round. I think the clean interface is just what is needed: uncomplicated, and
easy for the average user to understand. Of course there are developing
issues, but they will be resolved. One final comment. The MS antispyware
news group is one of the best (if not the best) I have seen!! I often visit
other MS newsgroups, but have not received the timely level of professional
response one has come to expect on this one. Nice job !!

I've been using Windows Defender (beta 2) since it was first released
a few weeks ago and have not encountered a single error message. And the
updating process has been remarkably smooth and efficient, definitely an
improvement over beta 1. At least for me.

Hi

Yes, I have installed it on maybe 20 PCs without any problem.

I am most impressed with the RTP functionality which stops
malware directly.

I hope that MS tries to include so many a possible for RTP
blocks instead of building complicated removals for a few.

Go on I dare you :)) Uninstall Defender and then re install it and see if
all is still OK. NO I am only joking unless you have a test machine where it
does not matter.

Likewise, I have been using Windows Defender (Beta2) since it was first
released and had never encountered any problems until this signature update -
so, just hang on - your time may be coming -- lol! When (and if) it does,
it is very frustrating and irritating to get in this update loop, believe me.

Windows Defender Live (Beta), help needed from Microsoft.
Except for the new download Signature Version 1.14.1314.1, all previous
versions have fallen into a loop to High Priority Definition Update
1.14.1314.1 for Beta Windows Defender (KB915597). The users of the Windows
OneCare Live (Beta) have downloaded automatically the file in excess of 54
times, as per the Update History, with no positive results. Previous results
of the Windows Defender (Beta) Definition Updates that worked are:
1.13.1276.3, 1.13.1272.4, 1.13.1276.16, 1.13.1282.6 and 1.13.1386.1 with KB
892519, 892519, 892519, 915597 and 915597 respectively. The loop failure
started when trying to update to 1.13.1288.5 and 1.13.1314.1 both with
KB915597, from older Signature Versions. Worst of all, no removal of the
Defender beta is possible nor installation of the newer 1314 version ontop of
the other.
Microsoft, please read also the many complains in the Discussion Groups Home

I suspect ONE of the reasons my experience with Windows Defender has
been so smooth is that my system isn't running many background programs,
hence less chance of a conflict. I have only two items listed in msconfig
(Avast AV and Windows Defender), and only 25 processes in Task Manager.

My problems with updating Windows Defender are occurring on a first-time
installation of it, on a month-old clean install of Win2K. I wonder why
some folks seem to be having this trouble, while others have no problems
with updating at all . . .

I have *lots* of tasks constantly running; in fact my CPU is permanently
(24/7) running at 100%. Yet I do not have the slightest problem with WD
or its updates.

I have to agree that MS has overall drastically decreased usability of the
program for me. The update bug forces me to quit using WD...
Besides, the interface (and the new tray icon) seem arrogant, paternalizing,
and lacking coolness/usefullness...

Will wait for beta3 ;)

Will there be a beta 3 for Windows Defender?
