windows could not load the installer for monitor

A customer brought this XP Home SP2 machine in saying that it had been
running slow, and now he had no video (tried 2 monitors). I fired it up in
safe mode to remove the adware and the display worked first time, but when it
boots up in protected mode, it detects device "monitor" and then pops up
"windows could not load the installer for monitor - please contact your
hardware vendor."

I got a few google hits on this, but this one is different in that the
display icon is in Control Panel and it can be launched.

It does seem to complete the detection process, saying the device is now
installed, but DM shows "unknown device" under monitor, and it cannot be
deleted. In safe mode, no entry shows in DM for Monitor.

Any ideas?
