windows claims static configured IP wasn't available but it is available

Hello

I have computers with static configured Internet-IP-Addresses.

Some computers with Windows XP claim, after turning on, their IP-Adress was
used by an other computer. Instead of using the configured IP, they look for
another IP with DHCP, but there is no DHCP-Server.

I searched with portscans and arpwatch, but there is no other computer with
that IP. The computer worked with that IP for several month now, and
before, another computer worked at that place for 5 years...

There really is no computer with that IP, but windows won't accept it. If I
use another IP for that computer, everything is fine, but I and the users
have better things to do, than changing all day IP-Adresses because windows
believes it was fine to get a new IP today.

How can I tell stupid windows to not to check if another computer uses the
configured IP-Address? To just use it?

Roman, as far as I know there is now way to turn this off. This is a built
in function of windows networking. You can try to reinstall TCP/IP or all of
networking to see if this clears up the problem, but I have a feeling that
you are missing a system with the same configured IP. Windows XP doesn't
just make it up.

Thank you. Windows 2000 did only present a popup windows, but the adapter
worked. Windows XP now searches for a new address via dhcp, so the NIC is
disabled...

In this case, you are right. I found the system (and cannot explain why this
IP was configured there :-( ).
But I had the same problem some time ago - and I could not use this IP with
one computer. But it was no problem with another computer connected to the
same switch.
The problem "disapeared" some days later...

Glad to hear you worked out the kinks! I'm interested to know how you found
the system. How many systems are you administrating?

If Windows says there's another device on the network with that same IP
address, I have to believe that there is. Either use DHCP or make sure
everyone is using a unique IP address. You can't have more than one device
configured with a specific IP address; it won't work.
