Windows cannot find null

I have XP SP2 and IE6. Recently I downloaded IE 7 Beta 2 after which whenever
I tried to open a new URL (but not a daughter screen), I got multiple blank
"windows" with the message " Windows cannot find (null)". I used a system
restore point to revert to IE6 which worked but now find that I have many
recommmended Microsoft Updates that when downloaded and installed result in
the same problem/ message as above. Uninstalling the KB905915 update as
mentioned in this Newsgroup made no difference.
Any suggestions?

Symptom

Double-clicking the Internet Shortcuts cause the following error message:

"Windows cannot find '(null)'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and
then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click
Search."

Use the REG file in the following page:
