Windows authentication - 2000 Server and XP client

Rads

We have an Intranet site (ASP pages, IIS 5.0) with Windows
2000 server. We have clients with various operating
systems (2000, XP, 98).

We changed our security settings from anonymous to Windows
authentication. We did the following set ups to the client
browsers (IE)
1. Internet Options | Security | Custom Level | Security
Setting | Automatic logon with current username and
password.
2. Internet Options | Advanced | Security | Enable
Integrated Windows Authentication

It worked on all client machines except for a few XP
machine (it works on some of the XP machines!!!). We
confirmed that the service pack of XP and IE are same in
the XP clients that worked and that did not work. All
computers and users are in the same domain.

We need help to resolve the problem as soon as possible.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much,

It is possible that the webserver and the problem XP clients
do not share a common authentication provider. I have seen
XPs joined to domains that for some reason are not configured
in their policy to use NTLM v2. You did not say whether your
domain is uplevel or not, but for example in an NT 4 domain
if the W2k server with IIS does not allow NTLM (v1) and the
XP cannot do NTLMv2 then you get an endless login prompting
cycle.
