I am building a new Computer and I plan to do a clean install of Windows 7
onto it. Can I buy the upgrade copy of Windows7 or do I have to buy the
full copy? I have the retail Windows XP CD.

Thank you,

From previous post there doesn't seem to be a direct upgrade from XP to 7
without going to vista first so I think you'll have to do an install of 7
from a new full retail version.

Since you already have a qualifying OS (the Retail version of Windows
XP), you may certainly use an Upgrade rather than a Full version CD of
Windows 7.

Furthermore, even though the usual method of installing Windows 7 (using
the Upgrade CD) involves already having XP *installed* on your PC
(ridiculous, IMO), it is certainly possible to use your Windows 7
Upgrade CD to perform a Clean Install onto a bare hard drive:

(And since you have the qualifying Retail version of the Windows XP
installation CD, you need not lose any sleep over ripping off Microsoft.
:-) )

wrong..
you can upgrade XP to W7 its just a clean install.
no need to install XP..then Vista...Then W7

You use those terms very differently from the way most people do. A
clean installation is not a kind of upgrade, it's the opposite of an
upgrade. You can *change* from XP to Windrows 7, but you can't upgrade
to it.

Ignore the muppets who have replied thus far. You can buy an upgrade
copy of Windows 7 and do a clean install. M$ is desperate for people to
buy its products and so they have made it easier for people to buy a
cheaper version of its products especially those who wants to do a clean
install of Windows 7.

I have tried it, done it and it all works as it should.. THERE IS NO
NEED TO HAVE ANY QUALIFYING PRODUCT TO DO A CLEAN INSTALL OF WINDOWS 7.
Only the muppets and idiots will buy the full version.

Peter,

You can use an upgrade version of Win7 to do a clean install EVEN IF YOU
DON'T HAVE ANY QUALIFYING PRODUCTS LIKE XP OR VISTA. M$ is desperate to
have your money any how!. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY BUYING THE FULL VERSION.

I? Based on the two sentences I wrote above? Please be careful that
you reply that the correct post, not just any old one in the thread.

Your choice entirely, of course, but your view is *very* different
from mine. Not counting the server, I have four computers here, each
running a different version of Windows. One runs XP Home, one Vista
Home Premium, one Vista Ultimate, and one Windows7 Ultimate. I liked
XP fine, Vista better, and Windows 7 the best of all. I have had *no*
problems at all with any of these.

Ken I agree with you - and Win 7 with Vista and XP pro Mode via Windows
Virtual PC is a blast. Lots of confusion regarding XP to Win 7 - You can
use Win 7 Upgrade version for XP to Win 7, however it is not an "in-place
upgrade" which keeps data, applications and so forth.
