Windows 7 taskbar annoyances

L

Linea Recta

(Sorry for OT, but I haven't found a decent news group for Windows 7)

I have been able to eliminate the most annoying taskbar settings. But... I
can't find any option to disable the allways on top property. Have I missed
something?

thanks,

Where did you find those settings (hint)?

You missed the auto-hide option.

Thanks, but it's not on my server. I'll try a request.

Right click.

You missed the auto-hide option.

I'll have a look again in a minute (other PC). But I don't want to hide the
bar. Just want to be able to move an application window over it.

You can try refreshing the Groups list in your news client.

The group may have been added, but won't show up in
your client, until you reload the groups list.

The alt.windows7.general group does not show up in
Google Groups, so you can forget about making a posting
that way.

Thanks, I did a reload which by the way took a loooong time. But still no
"alt.windows7.general" appearing.
BTW, there seem to be loads of senseless groups nowadays of which many are
abandoned. Afraid nntp is'nt what it used to be :-(

Anyway I'm getting on quite nicely installing Windows 7 on my old gear. I
even succeeded installing a printerdriver for parallel printer HP deskjet
720C. At first this was hard to find and some "guru's" told me there was no
chance for my antique printer. I searched the HP web site but they didn't
have the driver for downloading. Then I tried the Windows option for
searching the driver on internet. Again this took a long time, but finally
it found and installed the driver! Printing works fine now and I can share
the printer with my Vista notebook. Installing and configurating the system
takes loads of time all together so I make intermediate images of the drive
with Macrium Reflect. I think I'll be ready before april 8.

Add another server to your NNTP client (Windows Mail), like Albasani or
Eternal_September. Both of those are free and both carry the Win7
newsgroup.

As VanguardLH has said, it's certainly on eternal-september and at least
one other. Which newsserver are you using? (Is it the one provided by
your ISP? I can't tell who that would be as you've munged both your
From: and Reply-To:, but I'm guessing it might be in .nl land.) Most
usenet clients (I see you're using Windows Mail, I don't know if that
one does) allow you to use more than one news server, so you don't have
to abandon the one you're on. (I'd recommend E-S over aioe [?] - it
takes a _tiny_ bit more setting up [trivial though], but posts are less
likely to get blocked.)
Thanks, I did a reload which by the way took a loooong time. But still
no "alt.windows7.general" appearing.

It is worth getting that 'group - the folk there are friendly, and it's
not high-traffic: I'd say between 0.5 and 4 × the level here, in fact.
BTW, there seem to be loads of senseless groups nowadays of which many

It sure isn't )-:. Partly because newcomers like (or are assumed to
like) web-based graphical everything, and probably mainly because the
providers of same don't mention that there's an alternative. As for the
abandoned 'groups, when you did the "reload", was there any setting for
"current" 'groups? Not knowing your present server (nor anything about
Windows Mail), I don't know if you have an option to only list 'groups
currently active, or are stuck with a list that includes all 'groups
(including silly ones) ever created.
Anyway I'm getting on quite nicely installing Windows 7 on my old gear.

I was amused to - some years ago, but still under XP - find that it had
a driver for an old impact ("dot matrix") printer (in that case a Star).
The test page that appeared was actually pretty good! I haven't looked
to see if 7 still supports, e. g., EPSON LX-80; I _think_ it does.

That's interesting, that it took a long time but eventually succeeded. I

Provided you're well-AVd and firewalled, I think the consensus - though,
in truth, nobody really knows though they'll claim otherwise - is that
it won't be catastrophic if you're not.3

That's a much applied privacy measure.

Believe it or not, but haven't had time yet to add the server :-(

Yes the good old days...
Since I got the printer working, I had my hope up for my HP scanjet 2200c
scanner. I found some information from people who got it working in Vista. I
tried the HP software, but it won't function no way. Tried all W7
compatibility settings, but it keeps crashing. I DID find a demo of a
program that supports my scanner in W7 (Vuescan). So I guess now I'll have
to find a registered version...

That's interesting, that it took a long time but eventually succeeded. I
wonder where it looks!

Yes, very mysterious! No way to find out, but not from HP I suppose...

Thanks, I now have registered with news.eternal-september.org and connected
to alt.windows7.general

Yes, it is "news.xs4all.nl"
I see from your next post that you've joined E-S anyway, but sometimes
you can ask those who run a newsserver to add a newsgroup.
That's a much applied privacy measure.
Though (a) sometimes people show - in their signature for example - how
to generate their real address, (b) I've heard it alleged (though I find
it hard to believe) that Reply-to: addresses aren't harvested. (I don't
think spammers are bothering much with usenet at all these days anyway.)

Yes, VueScan just is irritating because if _they_ can make it work under
7, why can't Microsoft. (We had a BENQ scanner which ran fine in
VueScan; for the purchase price of VueScan, we found an - hp IIRR - one
second-hand that has plenty of support.)

I see you ported my thread to this group :)
As you can see in my scanner thread here, I've also solved the problems with
my "incompatible" scanner in the meantime, so no need for Vuescan anymore.
