Windows 2000 Service Pack 5 ???

With the recent release of Windows XP Service Pack 2, there are MANY added
improvements and features (such as improved IE, disabling unneeded services,
etc.) that would be as equally beneficial for Windows 2000 Pro users. Are
there plans to release a Windows 2000 Service Pack that incorporates many of
the things found in XP's new service pack??

Sure would like to see a SP5 for Windows 2000 Professional that includes
IE6 SP2 and at least some of the other security enhancements in XP SP2.
With 10 months of "Mainstream" support and 5 years on top of that of
"Extended" support there's going to be a lot of Win2K around for a long
while.

Tom

Tom,

My current understanding is that we are looking at SP5 for Windows 2000 and
the possibilities of back porting some code from SP2.
However, mainstream (free) support for Windows 2000 ends June 20th 2005 so
any Service Pack would have to ship before then.

Mike

ROLLOUT W2K SERVICE PACK 5
I havent got a ROI on w2k yet and without being ALL
microsoft problems, but flaws, viruses and trojans have
been too easy to implement into their system. I have seen
and used XP and I dont like XP and feel more secure with
w2k. I dont like how Microsoft is embeding its own
security into its operating systems. I'd rather see
Microsoft focus on what it does best... produce O/s and
applications... AND spend money and time on securing these
by Q&A to reduce the need for updates and flaws in an
already proven system such as w2k. Microsoft's attitude of
its too hard to fixit lets just produce a new look
instead, is poor in attitude and in business sense.
Microsoft seems to have missed the point that selling
lemons will one day incite people to finally chuck their
system in the bin and find another system that offers
simplistic o/s and proven and needed applications. They
have the xbox for gamers. Rollout a secure, unflawed
update for w2k and then i will get inline for the next
Microsoft product that suits business. Let XP and the XBOX
be for those that want to play.
Its time Microsoft got serious. Because the window of
oppourtunity is open for all those other o/s.

My PETITION to Microsoft starts here
--------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft... We the people want w2k to be given back to
business... secure the flaws... provide us with update 5
that lets us get on with busines in the way it should...
securely and with business applications.

One of the major problems with Windows products and Microsoft's attention to security is the user. They have to design a system that is used by the gamut of users. From the user that needs a week to learn how to use a mouse to the user that knows more of the secret code in Windows then they do. The issues of security arise from the lowest denominator and are exploited by the highest. If they could ever put all users on a par then maybe they can have have a secure operating system under all circumstances. Since that is not likely to happen for consumer goods, the secure operating systems under all circumstances is pobably a pipe dream.

In addition to George's comments, they don't "fix" existing mature
products because it's too difficult to. They don't because it's not
profitable to. And I'm not just being cynical about this. They have
saturated the market and the only way they can continue to sell more is
by releasing new versions to cannibalize the installed base. Perfecting
W2K (though I agree makes sense to the consumer - I love W2K!) is not
going to get them a dime unless they go to a leasing licensing scheme
and we all know how well that went over when it was suggested.

I think that MS is trying to do everything to force you to get XP.
Win 2k mainstream support will end next year maybe on June 20th which means
that hotfixes will no longer be free and service packs must ship before the
ending of free support.
When Win 2k SP5 is going to be released?
Win NT 4.0 had a lot of SPs, the last one is SP6a and SP6 (Terminal Server
Edition)
Also, MS had not yet created Win 2003 SP1.
MS does that intentionally to not give features to some OS the force you to
move. Here is an example:
Win 95 had only one SP, Win 95 SP1.
Win 98 Gold had a customer SP and Win 98 SE had SP2.
Win Me has no SP.

And then Longhorn will be released and XP will be given the heave-ho.
Then Longhorn 2 will be released and Longhorn 1 will get the deep six.
Some are still complaining because NT4 got its 21 flush salute... how
long ago now? The more things change the more they stay the same. I'm
still running a small network on a mix of Nt's & W2k's. I have
absolutely no intentions of upgrading Windows on any of them. I don't
give a flying whoop about XP or that NT is no longer supported. The
decision to add XP will come when I add a new machine to the network,
the decision to upgrade when I decide that these old Intel 667 are
toast. I ran a Novell server over DOS 3.3 on an IBM 386SX for 10 years!
I figure XP will be history when my NT's fly out the door.
