Windows 2000 Rebuild

I have a server that needs to be completely rebuilt. The problem is that it
is running Small Business Server 2000 and it is the Domain Controller. When
the server is taken down and rebuild with the same name and everything, I
have to take every machine out of the domain and reinsert them. This creates
a new user profile for everyone on their machine and they have a problem
with this. The question is how do create a new domain controller without
having to remove machines from the domain and reinsert them? Any help on
this would be appreciated.

The SBS server is essentially the rootDC of your domain. Rebuilding with the
same name doesn't change the fact that the SIDs are regenerated. I think
you've already figured that out. What you can do is ghost the DC for
recovery/backup purposes.

To help you with your predicament, can you state why you are rebuilding? Is
it a hard drive problem, OS issue or are you updating to new hardware? If
you had an additional DC running W2K present, your domain would enjoy fault
tolerance.
