Windows 2000 errors( may be related to Symantec )

Hello,

[ Posting to a wider audience as I'm desperately trying to recover my
system. Please ignore if I'm not supposed to post in any of the
above aliases and excuse me for a long email. ]

System: Windows 2000 Pro. with SP4.

All of a sudden, I started getting this error message

"Files that're required for windows to run properly have been
replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain systems
stability, Windows must restore the original versions of these
files - Insert your Windows 2000 Prof. CD now"

1st time I got this, I thought my expired( 5 days ago ) Symantec
System works would've caused this problem.
But immediately Symantec also complained that "some Symantec
product settings have been changed by an unauthorized program. To
avoid problems, it'd be reverted back to the previous config. Ok
to continue". I choose OK, it says "Can't revert back, reinstall
all Symantec products".

Then windows update is also failing...

The Windows Update software did not update successfully. Below are some
suggestions to help you proceed:
a.. You may have clicked No when prompted to accept the Trust Certificate.
To allow the Windows Update site software to install, click Yes when
presented with the Security Warning dialog box.
b.. Your Internet Explorer security settings may be set too high. To
install the updated software and access Windows Update, Internet Explorer
security must be set to medium or lower, and active scripting and the
download and initialization of ActiveX controls must be enabled.

Note These are the default settings for Internet Explorer. For more

change your security settings, read Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) Article

has been working absolutely fine and I'm not sure whether the expired
Symantec could've caused any
problem.

Hi Cozmo

Suggest that you download a network copy of SP4 (the one that has all the
files on your machine not on the internet)
and that you do an uninstall of Norton i.e. don't reinstall over the top of
the problem, remove the thing entirely.

NOTE - when you uninstall Norton, don't forget to uninstall Live Update as
well. It's a different entry in the Add/Remove programs dialog box. There's
a really nasty bug in the latest version of that program that "forgets"
which programs you have installed -- that might have something to do with
your problem - if you have it set to automatically update itself without
telling you, it might have updated itself & caused you the error in doing
so.

Then run SP4. Then reboot. Then try to reinstall Norton if you're going to
do that.

Also, check which version of Norton you're running... I have loved
systemworks for
years... 2000/2001/2002 was great. 2003 on W2K SP4 caused me endless
problems, and from what I hear,
2004 sucks big time... especially the anti-virus software.

I've also had better luck not installing cleansweep (ever) nor process
viewer. goback is problemmatic sometimes
and just works other times.

Also, you might try doing the windows update "by hand" instead of using the
system service. go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com -- usually if that fails,
it gives you a bit more of a heads up as to why it failed. And, don't do all
of the things at once. Do ONE of them. If that works, do another ONE. And
pick something silly like the Journal Update or the DirectX update.
Something that's not going to cause much of a mess if it doesn't work right.

If you can't download the Active X driver when you start up windowsupdate,
then your security settings in IE ARE set to high, but otherwise it should
be fine.
