Windows 2000 and removeable media

Sal

Hi,

I have a Dell Latitude laptop that shipped with Windows NT
4.0 and a removeable media bay that supports either a
floppy or CD-R (you unplug the bay and switch out the
drive then reconnect). Hotswapping the drives worked fine
in NT through a 3rd party driver.

I have since installed Windows 2000 and have no trouble
hotswapping the floppy. The CD, on the other, is detected
fine but I have no option to stop or remove the device as
I do for the floppy. If I disconnect the drive the OS
hangs. The only way to disconnect is with the power off.

A Dell tech help rep told me that Windows 2000 supports
this functionality and I should be able to remove my CD-R
safetly without a reboot. I have all the latest updates
(SR-4) and drivers that I can think of.

Does Windows 2000 support unplugging a CD-R drive? I have
a Samsung SN-124 CD drive, btw.

Thanks,
Sal.

Sal, despite any hardware specific options, I think you
shoul be able to unplug it by using the Hardware Wizard
(System Properties|Hardware|Hardware
Wizard|Unistall/Unplug Device|Unplug/Eject device) and
select the appropriate device. If the device does no
appear there, it´s not recognized by Windows as a
removable device. Anyway, if it is a P&P device, you could
select unistall device and then reinstall it every time it
is connected, it´s a little worse choice but better than
restarting the computer.

Hope this helps,
Robert
