Window Installer silently failing

Hi I need some help with downloading. Every time I try to download or upgrade
apart from Microsoft, the windows installer silently fails half way through
and then just disappears, Its driving me crazy, I cant do anything, I have
Windows XP SP1 I think and I have tried new installer from site to apparently
overcome silent fails but still doesnt work.. I appreciate some feedback if
anyone can help...
