Winamp replacement?

Since all the news about Winamp eventually going belly-up, I've been
looking around to see what I could use as a replacement. Anytime
something like this happens to one of my essential programs, I prefer to
go ahead and make the switch so as to get used to it ASAP. I tried
"Foobar2000", but dumped it when I couldn't find CDDB support. Anyway,
I'm looking for something that does have remote CDDB support like
Winamp, as well as the ability to play at least the most common audio
files. I also liked Winamp's toolbar configuration...it scrolled the
currently playing song title. I'm not interested in skins and "themes"
and so-on.

Try MediaMonkey.... I understand it is somewhat compatible with Winamp.

Huh?

Music Match would be my choice, however, I use ITunes. If you disable all
the phone home options it works great...just can't use CDDB, but what the
hey.

Note: ITunes is like WMP, player and cataloger.

Of course, I don't trust The Register at all, but wouldn't be
terribly surprised to find out that they're right this time around.

Wow, sure sounds bad; I have (I think) the old 2.8 of winamp somewhere. I
pretty much use Itunes now though. For awhile there, though, Winamp was my
default audio amp after %$^^*() troubles with WMP and Real. Music Match
wasn't bad, but they bugged you all the time to buy things.

Thanks for the news.

IMHO, Winamp is still the best audio player.
MusicMatch is more like nagware/crippleware for me.

That's right, it doesn't do CDDB, but it *does* do FreeDB. IMHO,
FreeDB is even better, since CDDB appears to have awful licensing
terms, requiring the developer to pay up for its use.

In short: the more people using freedb, the better the situation
will get for all of us. I've been on Foobar2K/FreeDB for about 3
weeks now, and until now FreeDB had all the CD info I needed. And I
must say, I have some not-very-common CD's over here...

Wald

I have been very satisfied with JetAudio Basic. Please check it up:

Jet Audio installed a bunch of crap that can't be removed.
Even after cleaning out my registry, Jet Audio remains in
the add/remove folder and will not go away.
Also, the program was constantly trying to "call home".
Thank god I was able to tell my firewall not to allow it.

Be warned!

I absolutely love this little player. So many features yet small
enough to fit on a floppy disk including plug-ins and play list.
Does a wonderful job of playing streaming audio stations like club 977.

What I really like is.......no installation! Just click on the exe
file and play your MP3's.

I don't impress easily, but this little gem blew me away.

agreed. i've been searching like crazy for something to fill winamp's
footsteps. most players i've toyed with lately have gotten deleted
within five minutes of installation. but not xmplay. not only is it a
keeper, it is now my NEW default audio player. what with its
supporting winamp plugins *and sonique visuals... yep. the BOMB.

Foobar2000 uses a database called FreeDB, rather than CDDB. The
difference is purely monetary. The way I use it is to add all the tracks
ripped by CDex to a Foobar playlist, select them all, then right click
on one and select freedb > get tags.

You can also enable it to automatically get tags for any CD tracks added
to a playlist.

Quintessential Player is very good. One big plus is that it will record
streams and even title each track.

I still use Winamp v2.65 -- why upgrade if it does the job? ;)

Because Foobar does the job a bit better. It's lighter on resources,
plays more formats and has some great plugins.

On the other hand, 1by1 has the best interface, so I'd be tempted to
just stick with that.
