win98 to win2k upgrade

boy....lots of people with this prob..should be an answer..
Heres the deal
Presario 7478, Installed until says "could not load
installer for NET. Contact your hardware vendor. Click
ok...only option. It does this with NET client, NET
Service, and Infrarred. Reboots and start over . What are
options? Data on drive is needed and is now ntsf. Can i
safely get win98 back. I have no backup. or can win 2k
install still work? Bios is up to date. I see many
others with the similar problem and can't imagine why it
wont let us finish the upgrade... Im a computer
tech.....HELP!!

Can you disable this hardware just to get an OS on, get 2K drivers from the vendors and then load the hardware?
