Win2kTS-CitrixMF1.8 vs. Win2kSp4 - save profiles at logoff

M

Mark Curtin

Windows 200 Adv. Srvr. SP4
Citrix Metaframe 1.8 SP3

2 servers had been running fine for months at Win2k SP2. After blaster
patch 823980 both servers started crashing, printers would not be
available (showed as installed in Printers but not available to Office
apps), etc. Applied SP4- fixed stability and printer issues, but now
profiles are not unloaded at logoff, both servers "freeze" when other
users logon/logoff, very long logon times/sits at blue screen for 1-3
minutes before getting desktop. I have applied hotfixes for logon time
(824309) and "freezing" issues (32446) and they were resolved. However,
profiles are still not unloaded even after hotfix 327984 and, hence,
changes to desktop not saved.

I even attempted rolling back all hotfixes, and then SP4. It looked like
it uninstalled ok, but the OS still thought it had SP4, and when I tried
to install SP3 I was told it was older than the current SP, etc., etc.

So, anyway, I am back at SP4 and the 3 mentioned hotfixes and still no
profile unload. Anyone have similar experience but positive results?

Have you looked at kb article 824309? It addresses slow logon/logoff
issues.

Is that the only issue you are having? I have a Win2K SP3 Citrix
Metaframe 1.8SP3 box and am contemplating putting on SP4 in the next
few days. I'm going to have the hotfix in 824309 handy. I'll be
interested to see if it fixes your problem.

I would not recommend SP4 given all the issues I am now having with
previously non-problematic servers.

The hotfix you mentioned I also mentioned as having installed- it did
fix the long logon time issue. However, if I install 32446 to solve the
issue with client sessions "freezing" when other clients logon/logoff it
appears to break hotfix 327984 which fixed the "client not saving
profiles at logoff" issue. So I can either have profiles that save and
reasonable logon times OR sessions that do not hang when someone logs
on/off.

Like I said, I even tried to roll back to SP2 after removing the post
Sp4 hotfixes, in order- it looked like it did with no errors. Rebooted
and the server still thought it had SP4 on it. When I tried to apply SP3
I was told it was older then the installed SP4, etc. This is on 2
identical boxes.

324446 appears to address SP3 only- so I am waiting on possible update
to this hotfix for SP4????

I had neither installed to rollback. Are these included within SP4 (I
would assume). If so, how can I remove them now?

Yeah, unfortunately, both those patches are included in
SP4. Sorry about the confusion.

You wouldn't happen to be running antivirus software on
your server, would you?

In response to m most recent post, you wouldn't happen to
be running Kyocera printer drivers on your system, would
you?

No antivirus software on either box, and no local print drivers
installed at the console. All users get a full load balanced desktop and
they then install network shared printers from one of several print
servers from there. No Kyocera printers for sure.

Hmm....does this also happen if the users only use RDP to
access the server, rather than ICA?

I haven't tried this as we only run ICA clients.

I will mention at this point that I saw another post discussing a
registry unload problem and one respondent mentioned he had coded a
service to monitor handles not being closed during a user hive unload.
If it sees this it closes the offending handle(s). I installed as a test
on one of the 2 boxes and, indeed, it closes the handle that was causing
the issue allowing profiles to then be saved at logoff. The offending
process is (in all cases so far) msiexec.exe. I simulated several users
logging off/on and so far it seems to work every time. Obviously not the
solution, but a fix until the problem is solved. I will test this on
Monday with 30-40 users on this box and we'll see what happens. I will
post back with the results.

BTW- the other post was from the m.p.w.registry newsgroup, posted
8/21/03 title- Registry not unloaded at logoff

What's the deal with Kyocera? We have a big Kyocera
printer/copier/scanner they want me to put on the LAN. I'm always
reluctant to use these multifunction machines, even those that cost
over $10,000.
