Win2kServer Spooler Service Hangs...

Steve Potts

I have a Win2k Server, and i use it for many things,
including printing.

Recently when i clicked Start--settings--printers.. the
printer window Froze, and no-one could print..
I restarted the server, and all was good!

However, now the spooler service is stopped, i can restart
it but its only a minute before it stops again.

when i load the printers window in the control panel,
there are no printers i just have the add new printer
icon, if i start the service the printers all come back,
but only for a minute, then they all go again as the
service hangs...

any ideas?

Sometime the spooler crash because a of jetdirect problem
on a label printer. Restart the service and check all
your jetdirect, If its not the problem, clean the pending
into all your printer queue and restart the service...it
should fix the spooler crash problem.

Sorry if my english is bad....I'm from Quebec.

The most common causes of the Print Spooler service stopping are printer drivers and custom port monitors. If a new
printer or printer driver was added recently try removing it to see what happens. We can also check for a ustom port
monitor by looking at HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Monitors. If there is a custom port monitor we can
export a copy of that sub-key, as a backup, and then delete the sub-key to remove the custom port monitor. We would
then need to stop and restart the Print Spooler service for this change to take affect.

If this does not resolve the issue the Print Spooler service should add an entry to the Dr Watson log and generate a User
dump file, assuming Dr Watson is still the system's default debugger and it is setup to generate the User dump file, when it
stops. The log and the dump can be used to try and determine why the Print Spooler stopped.
