win2k wont reinstall

I want to reinstall a clean w2k system on a notebook with
a damaged modem.

The current W2K pro system runs fine, with the on-board
modem disabled and a replacement PCMCIA modem card, but
W2k pro won't reinstall on a second (3Gb free) partition
on the machine - the install hangs during hardware
detection, and if I try this phase again in "Safe mode" I
get a fatal error reported.

I've also tried to reinstall on to a clean formatted (FAT
or NTFS) 6Gb disk, getting the same error.

Can install and run W98 though, with defective modem
disabled...

Can anyone help me over this block pls?

Is the defective hardware disabled in cmos setup.
