Win2K will not recognize additional memory

J

J. Feustle

I've had this happen twice now, or two different
motherboards, one a Tyan, one an Asus. Win2K runs just
fine with 512K installed, but when I try to add an
additional 512K stick of PC2100 DDR, though the BIOS will
recognize the additional memory, Win2K will hang in a boot-
reboot cycle.

Any ideas will be appreciated

Greetings --

BIOS recognition of RAM isn't entirely meaningful, as all the BIOS
does is "count" the RAM. It doesn't test it in any manner. Have you
tried running Win2K with only the new module installed to verify that
it's not defective?

It's absolutely essential that any new RAM module(s) be fully
compatible with both the motherboard _and_ any other RAM module(s)
already in the system. Additionally, there are sometimes jumper
switches on older motherboards that need to be reset for the new RAM
configuration. Consult your PC/motherboard's manual for specific RAM
types that are acceptable, and any configuration requirements.

Thanks. I will check this again, but I had this problem on
the Tyan board with two sticks of 512K that were exactly
alike.

Does your motherboard support more than 512mb? The 815 chipsets didn't and
you did not say what your boards were.
