Win2k installation problem

Hi,

I'm doing a job for a friend of mine whose hard disk died. I installed the
new 40GB drive and ran the Win2k cd, it formatted the drive and went about
it's business. However when it came to the stage where it needed to reboot it
just went back in to the start of the installation again. It continues to do
this - just going around in circles.

However, I noticed that just before it brings me back to the setup screen
again, it says on the screen "Couldn't open boot partition to verify
signature".

Any ideas much appreciated.

Tks,

John

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for that, I tried what you said but unfortunately it didn't work,
it's still giving the same error regarding being unable to open the boot
partition to verify signature. I've also tried the fixboot and fixmbr
commands, both to no avail.

Is is possible that I have the jumper set incorrectly on the new hard drive?
(e.g. set to slave and Win2K needs to install on a master drive, bear in mind
there's nothing else connected to the ide cable.)

Regards,

John.

Yes by all means check it. Were you successful in deleting and or creating a
partition during text mode setup?
