Win2000 Won't Automatically Shut Down

Have Win2000 with Service Pack 4. It *Was* working fine until I
downloaded/installed all the MS Win2000 updates from the MS website --
coincidence? I've uninstalled many of the downloads in reverse order to
resolve, but no luck yet.

Now, when I shut down 'puter, it goes thru motions of a shutdown, then
I hear a little click like it is shutting down (which is a normal
sound), but the screen goes to all-black with a white blinking cursor
(looks a lot like a DOS-mode screen) -- so, 'puter has not ACTUALLY
shutdown.

Ran registry fixer, but that didn't do anything.

Ran MSCONFIG -- only MemCheck and vptray run at start-up. Nothing in
Device Manager appears to be hanging up.

So, basically to shut down, I have to manually push-in and hold the
main power button for about 5 seconds.

When I started 'puter in SAFE mode, it DID shutdown correct.

Other programs loaded (but not running at start-up): Ad-Aware, Spybot
S&D, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, Startup Cop (latter two were installed
after problem began)

Thanx for any ideas.

Here is a good guide for shutdown problems:

Most tips apply to Win2000 too.
