win xp upgrade

I have a laptop running home xp. It's not running well
and the only option under system restore is to return it
to an early date which yeilded no results. There is no
option full full recovery.

I understand by loading a new version of xp (upgrade to
pro?) I can wipe out the old system and start all over,
which is what I want to do.

Can I do that by purchasing an "Upgrade" or do I need the
full version? The laptop is currently running home xp and
I do not have the original discs. I'd like to install pro
xp but would prefer to pay less for the upgrade if that
would work.

Unless you have need of extended networking capabilities, there is little
point in upgrading to XP Pro.. you need to get the original software from
the laptop vendor as it will contain stuff that is peculiar to your
computer.. laptops use video, networking and sound drivers that are not
normally 'found' by a simple installation of 'retail' XP editions.. a visit
to the laptop manufaturer website can remedy this situation in some cases,
but I have known of a manufacturer using different drivers for the various
models that they produce, even tho the laptops were essentially identical..
I would normally tell people that unless the original software is supplied
with a laptop, it is not a good idea to buy one..

Yes you can do a full install with an upgrade cd, it should recognize the XP
Home install and then you can delete the original partition and create a new
1 or 2 or as many as you want, then format in the NTFS file system (not the
quick 1). Follow these steps for a full install.
